To wear perfume correctly, spray it directly onto clean, moisturised skin, focusing on pulse points like the wrists, inner elbows, and the base of the throat. Do not rub your wrists together, as this breaks down the fragrance molecules and causes the top notes to fade faster.

The Basics of Fragrance Application

Buying a beautiful fragrance is only half the battle. How you apply it completely changes how it smells, how far it projects, and how long it lasts on your skin. Even the most expensive designer perfumes will underperform if they are applied incorrectly.

The goal of applying perfume is to allow the scent to develop naturally through its top, heart, and base notes. When done right, your fragrance will create a subtle, pleasant aura around you, rather than an overwhelming cloud that dominates the room.

Where to Apply Perfume

Perfume performs best when it is heated by your body. This is why you should always apply it to your pulse points - the areas where your veins sit closest to the surface of your skin, generating the most heat.

The classic pulse points are the inner wrists and the base of the throat. However, if you want your fragrance to last longer and project further, consider spraying the inner elbows and the back of the knees. These areas are constantly in motion, helping to diffuse the scent into the air around you throughout the day.

If you are wearing a particularly strong Eau de Parfum, you might also want to spray the back of your neck. This creates a beautiful "scent trail" (sillage) that lingers in the air after you walk past someone.

What Not to Do

There are two common mistakes people make when applying perfume that ruin the scent profile.

First, never rub your wrists together after spraying. Perfume is constructed in layers. The delicate top notes are designed to evaporate slowly over the first thirty minutes. When you rub your wrists, the friction creates heat that literally crushes these delicate molecules, forcing the top notes to disappear instantly and pushing the fragrance straight into its heavier base notes.

Second, avoid spraying perfume directly into your hair or onto your clothes as a primary method of application. Most perfumes contain a high concentration of alcohol, which will dry out your hair and can stain delicate fabrics like silk or satin. Fragrance is designed to interact with the natural oils on your skin; spraying it on fabric flattens the scent profile.

How to Prep Your Skin

Fragrance oils need something to bind to. If your skin is dry, the perfume will evaporate much faster. To maximise longevity, apply an unscented body lotion or a light body oil to your pulse points before spraying. The moisture traps the fragrance molecules, significantly extending the life of the scent.

The best time to apply perfume is immediately after a shower, when your skin is clean, warm, and slightly damp. Your pores are open, allowing the fragrance to settle deeply into the skin.
