Wooden wick candles burn slower, cleaner, and wider than traditional cotton wicks, while producing a comforting crackling sound. To ensure they burn perfectly without tunneling, you must trim the burnt wood before every use and allow the wax to melt completely across the surface on the first burn.
The Appeal of the Wooden Wick
For centuries, the cotton wick was the only option for candle making. However, in recent years, the wooden wick has become the hallmark of premium, luxury home fragrance. It offers a completely different sensory experience, transforming a simple candle into a miniature fireplace.
The most obvious benefit of a wooden wick is the acoustic element. As the wood burns, it produces a gentle, rhythmic crackling sound that is incredibly soothing. Beyond the sound, wooden wicks also burn differently. They create a wider, horizontal flame rather than a tall, vertical one. This wider flame heats the wax more evenly, pushing the fragrance into the room faster and providing a cleaner, more efficient burn with less soot.
The Golden Rule: The First Burn
The biggest mistake people make with luxury candles happens within the first hour of lighting them. Wax has a "memory". If you light a new candle and blow it out before the melted wax has reached the edges of the glass jar, the candle will remember that ring.
The next time you light it, the wax will only melt down to that ring, creating a deep hole in the centre of the candle. This is called "tunneling", and it will ruin the candle, leaving thick walls of unused wax stuck to the glass.
To prevent this, the first burn is critical. You must allow the candle to burn for at least two to three hours, or until the entire surface of the wax has melted into a liquid pool that touches the glass. This ensures a perfectly flat surface for every subsequent burn.
How to Maintain the Wick
Unlike cotton wicks, which simply need to be snipped, wooden wicks require a specific type of maintenance. Before you light the candle (after the first use), you must remove the charred, blackened wood from the top of the wick.
If you leave the charred wood on, the flame will struggle to catch the clean wood underneath. The candle might light for a few seconds and then drown in its own wax. The easiest way to trim a wooden wick is simply to pinch the burnt top off with your fingers (when the candle is completely cold), leaving about a quarter-inch of clean wood exposed.
